Title [New prospects in the treatment of intraocular infection]

Abstract Clinical trials were carried out on 55 patients (55 eyes) divided into 2 groups. The main group consisted of 27 patients treated by a therapeutic complex including vitrectomy with ozonized normal saline and the controls (28 pts) were treated by vitrectomy with intravitreal administration of 0.4 mg gentamicin. The diagnosis was made by clinical and laboratory methods. The volume of liquid used in vitrectomy was recorded. Ozonized saline was to be used within the period during which the therapeutic concentration of ozone was retained. Ozonized saline in therapeutic doses is not toxic and in contrast to antibiotics, is characterized by a wide spectrum of effects. Hence, vitrectomy with ozonized normal saline is a new effective method for treating endophthalmitis.

Title [Mechanism of local action of ozone therapy and its combination with the magnetic field in patients with initial stage primary open-angle glaucoma]

Abstract Studies on the application of ozone and electromagnetic field in the rehabilitation of the patient carrier of primary open-angle glaucoma were started at "Carlos J. Finlay" Hospital in 1989 aimed at reducing the intraocular pressure and improving the deteriorated visual and nervous function. Taking into account that the results obtained were mainly directed to the alterations in the ocular hemodynamics, we proposed ourselves with this paper to study the mechanism of action of these techniques in the ocular hydrodynamics. 220 patients (308 eyes) carriers of initial stage primary open angle glaucoma were studied. Visual function and ocular hydrodynamics were evaluated among them. The results attained in the visual function showed an improvement of visual acuity of 68 % in the cases treated with ozone, and of 92 % in the combination therapy. The visual field improved in 100 % of the cases. In ocular hydrodynamics, it was observed improvement in both treatment schemes. There was no biological variation in the values of C and F in the therapeutic schemes used when the initial hydrodynamic parameters were normal. The response in the ocular hydrodynamics to the techniques used was satisfactory with local treatment, or without it. These techniques should be applied in the latent stage of the disease even when there are no evident clinical manifestations and the local treatment is not necessary.

Title [Impact of ozone therapy on the electrophysiological parameters of the retina in patients operated on for its rhegmatogenous detachment]

Abstract The impact of ozone therapy on changes in the data of maximum combined electroretinography (ERG), macular ERG (MERG), and rhythmic ERG (RERG) at 12, 32, and 40 Hz was studied in the rehabilitative period in patients operated on for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. The integral and local glial indices K(g) and K(c) were calculated. Studies were conducted before, within 1 week and 1 and 2 months after a course of therapy. With ozone therapy, ERG and RERG depended on the specific features of changes available in the fundus of the eye before surgery. In the early rehabilitative period after surgery (circlage with subretinal fluid removal), ozone therapy normalized the glial indices, by decreasing the supernormal activity of Muller's glial cells and drastically increasing their reduced activity. The maximum effect was revealed for the function of phororeceptors (except for the eyes showing pronounced myopic dystrophic changes in the fundus). There were increases in MERG, ERG b-wave, and low-frequency RERG by 12 Hz, i.e. improved functions of the macular region and distal neurons of the retinal rod cell system. A latent period was established for the manifestation of a positive effect of ozonwe therapy on the functional of neurons of the internal retinal nuclear layer, as evidenced by RERG changes. Ozone therapy positively affect retinal electrogenesis in cases of total retinal detachment accompanied by a pronounced reduction in the glial index Kg before surgery. The therapy was found to have a positive impact on the functional activity of the retina of pair eyes, by developing within a one-moth latent period.
