Abstract The efficacy of ozonated solution as a disinfectant for the ocular surface prior to ophthalmic surgery was evaluated in rabbit and human eyes. In experiment 1, 26 eyes of 13 adult Japanese rabbits were used. Eyes were randomly divided into three groups and irrigated with 20 ml of one of the following solutions: 4 ppm ozonated solution, 1.25% povidone-iodine solution or saline. Bacterial culture of the conjunctival fornix was performed before and after the irrigation of solution. Prior to irrigation, 4 of 10 eyes in the ozonated solution group, 3 of 9 eyes in the povidone-iodine solution group, and 5 of 7 eyes in the saline group were bacteria-positive. After irrigation, all eyes in the ozonated solution and povidone-iodine solution groups were bacteria-negative, while 4 of 7 eyes in the saline group remained bacteria-positive. Experiment 2 involved 13 eyes of 13 healthy human volunteers. All eyes were irrigated with 10 ml of 4 ppm ozonated solution and bacterial culture of the conjunctival fornix was performed in the same fashion as experiment 1. Four of the 13 eyes were bacteria-positive before irrigation (normal flora), while only 1 eye was bacteria-positive (same bacterium) after irrigation. These results indicate that the ozonated solution may be useful as a disinfectant for the ocular surface prior to ophthalmic surgery, although further studies are necessary to establish a proper irrigating procedure.
